Reaching the end of a SwimSafer stage means an assessment — a chance for your child to show what they’ve learned. Here’s exactly what happens and how to help them feel ready.
Key takeaways
- Every stage has two parts: a practical in-water assessment and an online theory quiz.
- The theory quiz has a 90% pass mark; the practical needs full competency.
- Both run on the national CAMS platform, with e-certificates issued via FileSG.
- Consistent weekly practice is the best preparation — not last-minute cramming.
The two parts of every assessment
Since SwimSafer 2.0, each stage has two components your child must pass:
In-water assessment
Your child must be assessed as fully competent across that stage’s skills — entries, strokes, survival and rescue skills.
Online quiz
A water-safety theory quiz with a pass mark of 90%, completed online on the CAMS platform.
Since July 2025, registration, the practical assessment and the theory quiz are all managed on the national CAMS platform run by Singapore Aquatics. Once both parts are passed, the e-certificate is issued and can be retrieved through FileSG.
What your child is tested on
Each stage has its own checklist across seven skill areas:
- Entries and exits
- Sculling and body orientation
- Underwater skills
- Movement and strokes (over a set distance)
- Survival skills
- Rescue skills
- Water-safety knowledge (the theory quiz)
Earlier stages focus on confidence, floating and short swims; later stages (4–6, also known as Bronze, Silver and Gold) add continuous swimming over distance, timed strokes, and personal-survival skills such as the H.E.L.P. technique.
Helping your child prepare
The best preparation is consistent practice. A few things that help on the day:
- Keep lessons regular — weekly attendance builds muscle memory and confidence.
- Read through the water-safety basics together so the theory quiz feels familiar.
- Make sure your child is well-rested and has had a light meal beforehand.
- Pack goggles, a well-fitting swimsuit, a towel and a warm change of clothes.
Why warm water helps
Cold water tires children quickly and makes them tense — not ideal for an assessment. At Happy Fish, our indoor heated pools are kept at a comfortable 30–32°C, so children stay relaxed and swim their best. Our coaches follow the SwimSafer 2.0 syllabus in our kids swimming lessons. See the full SwimSafer programme for details.
