SwimSafer Stage 3

Goal: 50 m continuous swim

Stage 3 introduces stride-jump entries, sculling and underwater skills, and putting on a personal flotation device (PFD) in the water and swimming with it. A key goal is swimming 50 metres continuously.

What your child learns in this stage

Entries & Exits Perform a stride/straddle entry
Sculling & Body Orientation Scull head first on the back, 5m
Scull, float or tread water for 1 minute (incorporated in survival & Activity Skills)
Underwater Skills In chest-deep water swim through hoops on pool bottom 2 metres apart.
Movement/Swimming/Strokes Swim 50 metres continuously
25m using either Front-Crawl (with side breathing) or Breaststroke
25m using either Backstroke or Survival Backstroke
Survival & Activity skills Scull, float or tread water for 1 minute
Dressed in swimwear, shorts and t-shirt demonstrate:
1. Swim 25m to a PFD
2. Correctly fit a PFD in water, swim 50m with PFD, then climb out of the water
Rescue Skills nil
Knowledge Rules of behaviour in, on or near the water
Water safety knowledge at a swimming pool
Water safety rules in various aquatic environments
Principles of personal safety and survival
Principles of watercraft safety
Recognising an Emergency
Principles when performing a rescue
SwimSafer 2.0 Stage 3 Assessment

Swim:

  • Swim 25m on front crawl or breaststroke
  • Swim 25m on backstroke

Survival Sequence 3A (w/o goggles)

  • Stride/Straddle jump in deep water
  • Swim 25m Breaststroke
  • Swim 25m Survival Backstroke
  • Scull head first on back for 5m and recover
  • Scull, float and tread water for 50sec
  • In chest-deep water, perform feet-first surface dive
  • Swim through hoops, place 2m apart using flutter/dolphin kick
  • Resurface and exit pool safely

Survival Sequence 3B (w/o goggles)

Dressed in swimwear, shorts and t-shirt demonstrate:

  • Swim25m using survival backstroke or breaststroke to a PFD
  • Correctly fit a PFD in water, swim 50m with PFD, then climb out of the water

How this stage is assessed: a practical in-water assessment (assessed as fully competent) plus an online water-safety theory quiz with a 90% pass mark. Since July 2025 both are managed on the national CAMS platform run by Singapore Aquatics, and e-certificates are issued through FileSG.
